Beloved Wife & Mother

Phyllis Claire Clarke (née Richards), affectionately known as “Peggy” passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24th, 2024, surrounded by her family, in Dunedin, Florida (Tampa). Peggy
was born Phyllis Claire Richards on December 29th, 1935, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Avis Khouri and Isaiah Richards. Raised as an only-child of a beautiful and proud Syrian mother, herself an
only-child. Peggy always spoke of how much she relished the time she was able to spend with her large paternal side of the family which included 5 siblings Pearl, Gloria, Shirley, Blossom
and Vincent.  Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Rupert Clarke a retired executive at West Indies Sugar Company, who died in October of 2001. Rupert is laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam, New York where Peggy will soon join him. Peggy enjoyed her 88 years of life starting her early years in Kingston, Jamaica. After earning her diploma from Kingston Technical School, she worked at Sprostons Jamaica, Ltd. as a stenographer and secretary. In June of 1957, Peggy married Rupert Mansfield Clarke from the Clarke family of St. Ann, Jamaica. There were four children of their union - Sonia, Orlando, Ian and Carolyn. As a young wife and mother, Peggy served as secretary of the PTA and sat on the School Board of Hope Prep School in Hope Village. In 1962 Peggy, known by her colleagues as Phyllis, began working with Canadian mining company Alcan, Jamaica Ltd. based in beautiful Mandeville. At Alcan, Phyllis became one of the first computer programmers in the IBM department. She had no way of knowing what a significant piece of history this was, as she witnessed the dawn of the computer era.
In 1972, shortly after the birth of youngest daughter Carolyn, Phyllis retired from Alcan to launch her own business. In her own words - “a new idea was buzzing in her head”. Phyllis opened a
clothing boutique in the heart of Mandeville which she named Teen Town. Teen Town gained success and popularity for selling the latest popular teen fashion during the 1970’s Disco era.
Ten years later, in 1981 Phyllis sold Teen Town and made the business decision to migrate to the United States and connected with her dear friend, Jesse Levi in New York who was also
Carolyn's godmother. Jesse and John Levi of Kingston Tropical Bakery, collaborated with Phyllis to help her establish a Jamaican family restaurant specializing in health foods. Her efforts
produced a successful family business which lasted over 20 years in which time Phyllis became a proud citizen of the United States. The family business employed several young members of
the local community over the years and Peggy was pleased when her young customers and former employees would come back to visit and share their successes. Phyllis and Rupert
placed a high value on education. The culture of the Clarke family restaurant in the Bronx, made a positive impact on the neighborhood and was instrumental in sending all four of Rupert and
Peggy’s children to university, including Law School for Sonia who’s a practicing attorney in Atlanta for the past 25 years. Phyllis retired in 2003 and spent her golden years enjoying gardening and her grandchildren in New York and Georgia where her daughters lived. She proudly witnessed her descendants and extended family pursue their own version of the American Dream..
Phyllis is survived by her four children - Sonia (sp. Paul) Mahoney aka. Pinky, Orlando Wayne Clarke, Ian Clarke and Carolyn Clarke Johnson. Phyllis was a beloved grandmother and great grandmother to twelve Grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her grandchildren are (Sonia) - Nicholas, Jordan, Kirsten, Zachary and Matthew. (Wayne) - O’Neil, Ashley, Orlando and Kiah. (Carolyn)- Stuart, Stephen and Scott. Her great grandchildren are Ashley’s son Jarrell, O’Neil’s son Cairo, Jordan’s daughter Anais and Kirsten’s son Noah.
She is survived and mourned by her beloved Uncle Leo, Dr. Leopold Richards - who is 98 years old and a retired university lecturer and author - and her two siblings - Blossom and Vincent.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her grandparents Ruth and Alexander Richards with whom she spent much of her childhood at their home in St. Catherine. Her departed family members also
include her late Aunt Felecia, Uncles Samuel, John, James, Robert, Isaac and Nathan and siblings Pearl, Gloria and Shirley. Finally, and most recently, Phyllis was preceded in death by her dear sister-in-law, also named Phyllis Clarke who passed away just eleven weeks ago on January 10th. Her sister-in-law and partner-in-crime was the loving wife of Rupert’s late brother, Barry Clarke. Barry and his wife Phyllis were known for their beautiful historic home on Devoe Terrace, which had a relaxed and welcoming spirit enjoyed by all who gathered there, where great shared memories were made.

"Do not stand

By my grave, and weep.
I am not there,
I do not sleep—
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning’s hush,
I am the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the day transcending night.
Do not stand
By my grave, and cry—
I am not there,
I did not die."
