Mike Boland from Kingsbridge passed away peacefully from brain cancer on Saturday evening, February 22, 2020 at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. He was 64 years old. Born and raised in the Kingsbridge/Marble Hill area, Mike is survived by his daughter, Angie Hedrick, four grandchildren Chassis, Hailey, Kinley, and Doyle-William and his sister Patricia and brother Joe.
He attended St. John’s-Kingsbridge school and later graduated from Good Shepherd grammar and then Bishop DuBois High School where he starred in track. In the mid 1970’s Mike served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer, primarily in Georgia. While working various jobs over the years, Mike fostered a lifelong love of the theater and music. He directed and sometimes performed in local and off-Broadway theatrical productions and later wrote and performed many of his own songs in Bronx and Manhattan venues. He once starred in a feature film with Stacey Keach, “Sea Witch”, shot in the Philippines.
In his spare time, Mike was a devotee of tennis and an avid cyclist, riding the trails in New York, Westchester and upstate.
Mike will be sorely missed by his friends and family for his intelligence, good humor and willingness to help others when needed.
