Marie A. Jefferson

Marie Apolonia Jefferson was born February 9th 1927 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Throughout Marie’s life she ex-hibited a tremendous amount of strength, determination and focus. As her mom traveled to New York City to make a better life for her only daughter working as a housekeeper, Marie grew up with humble beginnings. She was raised with her 8 cousins and her Aunt in Puerto Rico. At the tender age of 9, she traveled by boat to the Big Apple and began adapting to a completely different culture. While her Mom worked tireless-ly, Marie was practically raised by a lovely women named, Ms. Gertrude, who played a major role in her life. Not only did she teach her life lessons, she also taught her how to become be wom-an. Marie was so close to Ms. Gertrude that their families literally became one.
When Marie was 23, she married Robert Jefferson, a man she deeply loved. Having a family was so very important to her, especially since she was the only child; and God saw fit to bless her. As her journey continued, four beautiful children were created: Tony Jefferson, Anna Maria Jefferson, Frances Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson. There was nothing that Marie couldn't do and her determination to succeed was unmatched! Not only was she a housewife, she was a professional seamstress working hard long hours in a factory; creating clothing for her children and costumes for special occasions; knitting blankets for her children and grandchildren and etc. She was also a phenomenal cook with recipes that will live on forever! Preparing mouth watering dishes effortlessly was certain-ly a passion of hers. Without doubt, everyone loved Marie's food. They also knew she was cooking because the aroma of the spices would linger in the hall-ways of her Upper East Side apartment. Known as an advisor, she spoke with wisdom and grace. Therefore, it was obvious that she was the best person to talk to giving excellent advice to family and close friends. Marie’s determina-tion to succeed assisted her as she studied hard and worked even harder land-ing her a career in the medical field as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Receiving countless awards for her outstanding services, Marie’s kindness, strength and desire to be the best was recognized by everyone. A phenomenal woman in-deed! Her capacity to manage life seamlessly and to love infinitely created a balance as she juggled being a wife, mother and very active grandmother. However, after retirement, her job wasn't complete. As Marie had a tough external demeanor, she was just the opposite on the inside. Her heart over-flowed with compassion as she cared for and supported many friends and fam-ily members who knew she was reliable and dependable. She was always there! Marie Apolonia Jefferson’s journey ended on May 27th 2019 and on this day we say goodbye to a phenomenal woman who impacted so many lives. She leaves behind 3 children, 12 grand children, over 20 great grand children, and so many friends. She was also blessed in her 92 years of life to become a great, great, great grand mother of one.
