Jose "Checo" Leonidas Abreu, originally from Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic immigrated to the United States in 1963, eventually becoming an American citizen while maintaining his strong Dominican roots.
He is survived by his wife, Juana Flerida Abreu Collado and six children: Geovanna, Carmen, Jose Manuel, Juan Carlos, Zulma and Emmanuel; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren as well as two brothers, Leonardo Abreu and Sergio Abreu.
Jose was the beloved patriarch of a large, loving family and a positive and loved icon of Washington Heights where he resided for over 50 years. He was a faithful steward of St. Rose of Lima Church and an active community member and leader of the following associations: SUPROCE (Asociacion Comunitaria de Cebu), Aguilas Unidas, and others to raise funds for the betterment of his home town in Dominican Republic.
During his retirement, Jose loved spending time with his many children and their families, his nieces, nephews and brothers. Shooting pool with his friends at his Social Community at Riverstone Senior LIfe Services was one of his favorite pastimes.
Jose was a peaceful man, who greeted everyone with a warm smile and lived his life to the fullest. His youthful, peaceful and joyful demeanor endeared him to all generations.
Don Jose! Vale Checo! This world will not be the same without you, you will always be with us.
