Gertrudys Mas Obituary

Gertrudys Mas Garcia, daughter of Rosa Garcia Selgas and Benjamin Garcia. Born, November 17th, 1932 in Cienfuegos, Cuba and died April 22nd, 2020 at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, NY.  

         One of eleven siblings, she is survived by her four children Alberto S Mas, Norma L Rosa, Juan R Mas, and Joseph R Mas, her brother Benjamin D Garcia (94), her nine grandchildren, and her two great grandchildren Violet and Mariana Mas, plus one on the way. She is predeceased by her husband Alberto Mas Hernandez, and her siblings Carmen, Hilda, Maria, Lenor, Jesus, Henrietta and as well as her parents.

         Gertrudys widowed in 1966, raised her four children in Washington Heights New York, where she lived since her arrival April 22th, 1962.  Her earlier years were spent between La Habana and Cienfuegos, Cuba.  She married in 1952 to Alberto.  She studied accounting and business at Escuela de comercio Cienfuegos, Cuba.  While living in New York, Gertrudys worked at different waitress service jobs including Horn & Hardart Automat and the Central Park Zoo.

    Gertrudys enjoyed doing crafts she learned from an early age; including knitting and crochet.  She was very gifted at managing limited resources, selling handmade artisan home décor and clothing.  She was a woman that revered family, she was able to successfully bring her mother and three siblings from Cuba during the late 1960’s. For most of her life, along with her sister Carmen, she continually provided money, food, and clothing to her niece Rosa, and to her two sisters, friends and their families who stayed behind in Cuba.

   As a single parent, she raised her four children.  She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her greatest joy was seeing her family and spending time together.  Gertrudys, embodied the true meaning of love; she lived to sacrifice for others through giving.  Throughout her life, she always found a way of generating extra income to be a blessing to others.  She will always be remembered of a family centered mother, that sacrificed for her loved ones until the very end.

    Gertrudys Mas, will be interned at the Maple Grove Cemetery, 535 Hudson Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601 at 1PM, April 28th, 2020.  A memorial service will be held on a later date celebrating her life and family.
