Eugenie C. White

Eugenie C. White, who preferred to be called Genie by her friends, died on Sunday, March 8 2026 at 6:08 AM. She was 109 years old. She had been residing for the past 11 years at Scherviervier Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Riverdale, NY. However, as her health began to fail, she spent her last week in Hospice Care, dying peacefully.

Genie attended two colleges before receiving her BA from Marymount Manhattan College.

Initially, she attended NYU after graduating from high school. In 1941 she joined the war effort, employed as a clerk. She married Charles M. White in 1945, and they had a daughter, Marilyn in

1946. Genie did not return to academia for over 25 years, when she attended Malcolm-King Harlem College Extension at night and earned an AA degree in 1978, concentration in History and Social Science. In 1983 she received a BA from Marymount Manhattan College, which helped advance her career at the United States Department of Labor, Personnel & Training.

Genie loved gardening and formed a club for the youngsters in her building. Parents became involved as well, and it became a favorite morning pastime. Her other passion was politics and creating positive change in her community. She ran rent strikes for building improvement, and encouraged others to do the same. Neighbors expressed their gratitude by awarding her a plaque for outstanding community service.

Genie is survived by her daughter (Marilyn), her grandchildren (Maya and Kristopher) her great grandchildren (Nicole, Olivia, Hunter, River, Rhodes) nieces (Elena, Vicktoria), nephews, (Alto, Victor, Mel great niece (Monica) great nephew (Erik) great, great nieces (Violette, Millicent, Kristiana) and great, great nephews (Mason, EJ)
