Han-Liang Yu

Dr. Han-Liang Yu died peacefully at his home in Bronx, NY on 3/5/19 at the age of 77.
 

Dr. Yu is survived by his wife Hui-Zhu Yu and his son Yue Yu. Dr and Ms Yu had been married for 37 happy years.
 

Dr, Yu was born on May 5th, 1941 in Shanghai, China to Zhenjin Yu and Linda Sun. He graduated from Xian 4th Military Medical School in with a doctorate degree in medicine. Moving back to Shanghai after his training, Dr. Yu began working at People's 6th Hospital as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in hand and microvascular surgery, working with Dr Zhongwei Chen, a pioneer and leader in replantation and hand surgery. He subsequently was awarded a fellowship in plastics and hand surgery department at Montefiore Medical Center. He was able to take obtain a faculty position and professorship in surgery at Montefiore. He and his family permanent relocated to the United States. During his tenure he was an assistant, then associate professor at Montefiore, he wrote three books on microvascular and hand surgery and trained numerous surgical residents and fellows in microvascular technique. He worked at
Montefiore Medical Center for 34 years and retired at the age of 75.
 

Dr. Yu had a talent for learning languages and learned Russian in primary school where he excelled. He learned English through the radio, via Voice of America radio broadcasts while he was in China at a time where doing so was frowned upon. One of his proudest moments was becoming an American citizen on Feb 10th, 2000. He was a very motivated individual who loved to play the Erhu (Chinese violin) who was passionate about traveling, gardening and the beauty of the natural world.
 

A funeral is scheduled at Williams Funeral Home in Bronx, NY. His son, Dr. Yue Yu will officiate the
ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dr. Han-Liang Yu's life.
