A Loving Tribute
Alma Noel Wheatley was born to the late Mavis Alethia Gibbs and the late Orthniel (Ottie) Wheatley on December 29, 1943, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
She attended P.S. 143 elementary school in Corona, Queens located in New York City. Following completion of her General Education Diploma she studied Psychology at Bronx Community College where she was a respected tutor. In 1981, Alma went on to work for New York State for the next 32 years where she retired as a supervisor in 2013, from Metro DDSO. She was strict, yet fair and well-respected amongst her colleagues and residents.
As a lover of musical genres such as Jazz, Salsa, Blues, Calypso and Reggae she often sang around the house. She also loved to dance Salsa with her father. Alma truly adored animals, so much that she held many as companions throughout her life including several dogs, cats, birds, and a monkey named Teresa.
As the matriarch of the family her distance did not diminish her value to loved ones. Whenever anyone needed anything she was always there! Whether to lend an ear, a dollar, share her home or a counseling session, Alma impacted those around her deeply. She genuinely used her love of Psychology to help those around her be their very best selves. Her humor reflected real life and was bold and direct.
She transitioned from this earth on Thursday January 9, 2020 in Bronx, New York and left behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She will now rejoin her sister Jeannette “Grace” Brewster, Amy and Aunt Adelia Gibbs, may you all rest in power.
Our dearest Alma, when it’s all said and done you can say “Real recognized real.” You brought so much authenticity, strength, love, laughter, and genuine energy to the lives you’ve touched. Your legacy will live on through your lessons, and through your family who knew you. Rest now for you are in no more pain and have now become an ancestor to us all. We will continue to speak your name, forever carrying your memory in our hearts.
